Author: Marissa Meyer
Published: January 3, 2012
Length: 390 pages (10 hrs 6 min)
Series: Lunar Chronicles Book #1
Format: Audio (Audible)
Challenges Read For: Monthly Key Word Challenge

Thoughts: The first half of the book had me worried that this story wasn't going to live up to the hype surrounding it. I'm not sure I really liked the parallel to Cinderella. Of course, we all know what happens in Cinderella, so how could any part of this book be a surprise or at all any more interesting than Cinderella? But there are some additional elements that add something new to the book. I'm glad I liked this book enough to want to read the next book in the series, because there are still a lot of unresolved issues.

Published: September 6, 2011
Length: 391 pages
Series: No- this is a collection of short stories
Format: Paperback (Library)
Challenges Read For: Paranormal Challenge

Thoughts: This is an anthology of stories that are labeled Steampunk, but I chose to read it for the paranormal challenge because most of the reviews stated that there was only trace amounts of Steampunk elements in the entire book. I enjoyed this book but it didn't rock my world. The first couple of stories had me a little bored. It picked up a bit after that and I enjoyed several of the other stories. Definitely some eerie elements in there and creepy situations that would have had me on edge, but the 'suspense' word in the title is misleading. So, overall a decent read and not a complete waste of my time.I had fun reading this, especially since I haven't read a collection of short stories in years.

What's Next?

(So excited to read this because I loved Graceling. It's considered a companion to Graceling, so I don't expect it to continue on with the Graceling plot- is that right?)

"It is not a peaceful time in the Dells. The young King Nash clings to his throne while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him. The mountains and forests are filled with spies and thieves and lawless men.

This is where Fire lives. With a wild, irresistible appearance and hair the color of flame, Fire is the last remaining human monster. Equally hated and adored, she had the unique ability to control minds, but she guards her power, unwilling to steal the secrets of innocent people. Especially when she has so many of her own.

Then Prince Brigan comes to bring her to King City, The royal family needs her help to uncover the plot against the king. Far away from home, Fire begins to realize there's more to her power than she ever dreamed. Her power could save the kingdom.

If only she weren't afraid of becoming the monster her father was.

  1. I really liked Cinder too - and Graceling. Fire goes off on a different story arc, so it's just barely related to the first book - so as long as you're okay with that, I think you'll love it. The 3rd book then follows the first, and tries to tie them all together in the end, but I didn't like it as much - but still worth reading if you've already read 2/3.

Hope you enjoy your reads this week :-)

    1. Thanks! I really want to know what else happens with Graceling but I'm liking Fire so far, so I think it will be good. I thought Cinder was a fun play off of Cinderella and I liked seeing how the two stories differed and how the cyborg element was added. Very cool.
