Monthly Key Word Reading Challenge

monthly key word challenge

For this challenge I have chosen ten key words associated with each month in 2013. Your task is to read one book each month whose title includes one or more of the key words for that month. For instance, in January I might read Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah. The key words are listed below.

GUIDELINES

* The title you choose can be a variation on one of the key words. For example- your title could include the word 'snowing' or 'snowflake' even though the key word is 'snow.'

*Key words can be tweaked. For example- You could read "Cinder" or "Ashes" for the key word 'Fire' and that would be just fine. If the key word is 'family' then your title could include the word 'sister' or 'mother.'If the key word is 'food' then your title could include the word 'cake.'

* Link up below to participate and add additional links any time you post about the challenge or post about a book you read for the challenge.

  1. Ooh interesting challenge - count me IN. I'll write up a post later in the year, and then add it to the linky - or can we just add the general blog address? Also, not sure if you already know about "http://novelchallenges.blogspot.com/" - where you can send your challenges and they will re-post them.

  8. Very clever idea. I thought I was going to participate, but don't think I can. I have too many books I "have" to read.

I will be checking back, though, to see how much fun everyone is having.

    1. Hi Elizabeth! Thanks for stopping by. That Spine Speak button was actually made from a photo taken during my engagement session. Haha! I love books so much they had to be in my engagement photos. And I added a follow by email option to the sidebar so you can follow that way if you'd like.

  25. Hi! My question is: do the words have to be read the specific month, or can we fulfill the twelve whenever it works out for us? I'm one of those folks who does a million challenges and cross over as much as possible. :)

    1. I am totally not going to be picky on reading the book in the specific month. I just want everyone to be able to have fun with the challenge so do what works for you! :)

  26. I have the same question as cmriedel - must each month's book be read in that particular month? Or could I read, for example, a March book in January?

    1. Hi Lynne- Sorry it's taken me a bit to get back to you. You can read them in whatever order you like. I want the challenge to work for you and be fun!

  27. Question on whether this would work for January. For white, Geisha: A Life, because their is a geisha in white makeup on the cover and she discusses their traditional white makeup a lot in the book. Thanks!

    1. Yes! That would totally work. I think it's fun for everyone to adapt the key words in their own way to fit their books.

  30. This looks like a really fun challenge, thanks for hosting it. I've already made a list with potential books for the whole year, although it'll probably have to be tweaked as I go along, as there are several books on it that I'm not going to wait months and months to read.

    1. Also, can I read more than one book a month for the key word challenge? Looking through my TBR list, I have a LOT of books that fit with some of these key words. Frankly, narrowing it down to only one could be tricky. :)

    2. Heck yeah! Read as many as you want each month! Go rockstar on it. I love that. Also, you can read them in any order. Thanks for joining!

  34. a little late in linking up my January review, even though I had finished the book. I had so much to say about Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and I still don't know that I did the book justice. Loved it! Now onto Feb and To Kill a Mockingbird.

  37. I honestly thought I had linked up my January book, but I scanned through the link list and it's not there. Brain is fried, I guess! I did read it in January, as evidenced by my review. Just so you know I'm being honest. =O)

My February book might be stretching it a bit, but when I saw that diamond was a key word and my book was The Shining, I thought of that Rihanna song, "Diamonds," and the line, "Shine bright like a diamond," (hate that song actually). Hope it works!

    1. Ha ha. I think it works. You know, I've been thinking I probably should do a separate link up for each month. Maybe it would make it easier for everyone to link up? I think it would make it easier for me to go back through and read everyone's reviews without missing anyone too.

Death on Demand by Carolyn Hart is a great little cozy mystery. Also Ghost at Work by Carolyn Hart (both are lighthearted mysteries- no bloody stuff)
The Death Cure (Maze Runner #3)
      The Phantom Tollbooth
A Discovery of Witches is a personal favorite
The Near Witch by Victoria Schwab
